چکیده

The authors report the first results in studying the polarization anisotropy of the microwave backscatter from nadir observations provided by Jason-1 altimeter in both Kuand C-band. A small but clear wind direction signal for wind speeds above 6 m/s is revealed. These azimuthal variations of radar cross-section increase with increasing wind speed up to 14 m/s. The signatures then level off at higher winds. These results extend, for the first time, recent theoretical improved scattering approximation, and point some similarities between scattering and emission mechanisms at nadir. The observed directional effect can thus be interpreted as a signature of the curvature anisotropy of wind-generated short-scale waves. Sensitivities to both wind speed and sea state are also reported in the present analysis.

Modeling of Microwave Backscattering from a Rough Sea Surface with Steep Waves

Traditionally, Kuand C-band radars are used in ocean scatterometry to retrieve an ocean wind vector. Examples are QuikSCAT and ASCAT satellites. Recently, attempts have been made to use X-band SAR aboard the German TerraSAR-X satellite for the same purpose [1]. Usually, wind retrieval is performed using empirical Geophysical Model Functions (GMF). In the past, a set of GMFs have been designed b...

Author Guidelines for 8

An empirical relation between normalized radar cross sections (NRCS) and wind vectors, known as the geophysical model function (GMF), has been established for specific wavelengths, such as Ku-band and C-band, by using scatterometermeasured NRCS and buoy or model winds [1][2]. On the contrary, L-band NRCS dependence on wind fields has been investigated by using airborne and spaceborne Synthetic ...

Studies of Sea Surface Normalized Radar Cross Sections Observed by Cloudsat

The primary science instrument of the CloudSat Mission is the Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR). The CPR is a W-band (94 GHz) nadir looking radar (e.g. Tanelli, 2008) with the purpose of measuring backscattered power from hydrometeors (clouds and precipitation). Although the CPR contains an internal calibration system, external calibration using geophysical sources with known normalized radar cross-s...

Ocean Remote Sensing with Airborne K.-Band Scatterometer

A bstnzct An airborne Ku-band scatterometer (NUSCAT) was used to measure ocean backscatters during the Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (S WADE). The objective is to improve understanding of the relationship between ocean radar backscatter and near surface winds. BackScatter measurements are presented for Gulf-Stream boundary, low wind, and large wave effects. Over the boundary crossings, large...
